Why Conservatives Always Take a Beating
The Corner says:
The Bristol Palin story has caused a lot of us conservatives to make comparisons. We're saying, "Compare how the media are handling this with how they handled that." We've heard about John Edwards and Jesse Jackson. ("How come the media didn't care about their birth-control techniques, when they were tom-cattin' around?") We've heard about Al Gore III. ("How come his arrest didn't spark a national conversation about kids, parents, and pot?") And I have heard rather a lot -- from readers at their keyboards this morning -- about Barack Obama's brother, living in his African hovel. ("Where's the brotherly love, you know?") Anyway, I imagine the list will grow . . .It is unfair, of course. But it stems from a (probably intentional) fundamental misunderstanding about what Conservatives stand for. Liberals think that Conservatives think we are morally perfect, and when they get the chance to prove to us that we are not, they jump all over it and call us hypocrites.
It shows itself in the flap over Governor Palin's daughter. The media, and the rest of those on the Left use the situation to makes themselves feel/look better by implicitly or explicitly saying that it is they on the Left who are morally better because they would have never told the young girl not to try and resist her biology in the first place.
It leads to the second rumination by thos eon the Left. Palin's, and, by extension, Conservatives' "Abstinence Only," policy doesn't work. Well, first of all, it certainly would have worked had it been being used. But, the point is, that it wasn't being used, they will say. Yes, well, as the comments from NRO above indicate, the Liberals favored birth control methods (including abortion) weren't being used by John Edwards (if the child is indeed his) nor Jesse Jackson. Had they been used, they might have worked, but not with the 100% certainty of abstinance.
Most in the media believed that news of Governor Palin's daughter's situation would cause Conservatives, especially Evangelicals to flee. Nothing shows their misunderstanding of Conservative Christians more than these predictions. We understand.
Basically what it boils downto is this: Liberals, especially when it comes to sex, reduce man to his biology. We on the right - especially we on the right who are Christians - do not reduce ourselves to our biology.
We expect more. We strive for more. Our commandment is "Be ye perfect,". But we fail, and we know it. Which is why we ask for help, and, why, when we ask, we get it. And because we fail, every day, we are commanded, in turn, to forgive the same failures in others.
This is what the Liberal's will politely call "misguided".
